New Lunch Program Hoping to Boost Aboriginal Students’ Graduation Rates

Brooks Secondary has launched a new lunch program specifically designed for aboriginal students.

The Tla’amin program gives students a food card that lets them spend up to $24 a week in the school’s cafeteria.

Around 30 Tla’amin teenagers attend the Powell River school.

For the past four years, the Tla’amin Nation has provided funding for the James Thomson Elementary breakfast program.

They’re also working with Assumption School to develop a similar food program.

The program will ensure students eat better and may actually result in more aboriginal students graduating.

Across Canada, only about 1 in 4 aboriginal students graduate high school, while 9 out of 10 non-aboriginals complete their studies.

The punch cards are sold at the Brooks Secondary office.
