Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA reacts to Burnaby care home layoffs

SUNSHINE COAST, BC- The NDP MLA for the riding of Powell River-Sunshine Coast is assuring residents after a Burnaby care facility fired its workforce.

Finnish Manor is contracting out nearly 50 of its care aides, according to a release from the Hospital Employees Union, released on Feb. 16th, 2018.

Nic Simons said those layoffs should not happen on the Sunshine Coast.

“There are a lot of people upset about this (the Burnaby layoff), I haven’t heard a lot from them because I think many know that in the circumstances that we inherited from the previous government this was a likely outcome,” he said.

“I think they understand also, that the delay has already been too long. Doctors have been writing letters saying we can’t wait longer (for more care beds on the Coast).”

Simons said Health Minister Adrian Dix has promised that the existing jobs in the two care homes on the Coast, Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge in Sechelt, which have been planned to be shut-down since 2016, will be preserved in a new facility.
