Kings add scorer Fawcett ahead of next season

POWELL RIVER, B.C. – The Powell River Kings continued their off-season moves on Monday by signing high-scoring forward Matt Fawcett.

The 1999-born Lincoln, Rhode Island native spent the last three seasons at Wichendon Prep School in Massachusetts. In 82 games, he scored 71 goals and recorded 164 points.

For two of those seasons, he played alongside current Powell River King, Ben Thomas.

Fawcett also has 12 games of junior experience, when he played with Sioux City in the USHL.

“I think Powell River gives me a great chance to develop and get ready for college,” he stated in a release from the BCHL team.

“Ben Thomas told me how good it was out in Powell River and his experience with the Kings, so I’m just looking to go develop, have fun and play a high level of junior hockey.”

One of Fawcett’s biggest assets is his ability to score.

“He’s probably more of a pure scorer than anything,” said Kings coach Tyler Kuntz.

“He’s quick, he’s a smaller guy but he’s an intelligent player who is very dynamic offensively and you can never have enough of those guys.”

Fawcett already has his college plans set in stone. He’s committed to the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. He said he plans to study entrepreneurship.

The young forward will train out east during the off-season, and will then make the trip out to Powell River just ahead of the team’s Main Camp in August.
