POWELL RIVER, B.C. – A victim of theft took matters into their own hands in Powell River late last week.
Constable Chris Bakker with the local RCMP detachment said that on January 10th, the RCMP received a report of a fraud at The Source electronics store.
Bakker said a wallet had been stolen from a vehicle in the parking lot of the nearby Canadian Tire. The thief attempted to use one of the cards from the stolen wallet at The Source, which prompted a police response.
Bakker said when officers arrived on scene; they found the owner of the wallet holding the suspect to the ground.
Police arrested the 39-year-old male suspect. He’s facing 11 charges including fraud, possession of stolen property, causing a disturbance and resisting arrest.
Bakker said although the situation worked out, the police are emphasizing that the public not take matters into their own hands and ask the RCMP for assistance first.
BREAK AND ENTER
On January 11th, Bakker said the RCMP responded to a theft from BC Hydro in the 7200 block of Duncan Street.
Sometime in the previous six days, someone had broken into two of the utility trailers on the company’s property and had stolen items valued at around $5,000.
Bakker said that based on the items that were taken, police believe a vehicle was needed to move the items after the break-in.
THEFT OF BIKES
On Sunday, January 13th, police responded to a bicycle theft at a residence in the 4600 block of Algoma Avenue.
“Sometime between January 12th at 7:00 P.M. and January 13 th at 9:00 A.M. someone stole two Giant mountain bikes that were chained together,” Bakker noted.
He said that the approximate value of the bike is $3,000.

Between January 10th and 16th, the Powell River RCMP responded to 79 calls for service. Some of these calls include seven thefts, five assaults, two cases of impaired driving and three break-ins.
