New kelp research project at NIC

North Island College is expanding a research project, looking at kelp as a potential aquaculture species.

The study is being run in partnership with the BC Salmon Farmers Association.

College spokesperson Naomi Tabata says the project looks at growing kelp next to salmon farms to see how different marine conditions affect kelp growth.

Tabata adds results from previous pilot projects were very successful. The expanded study will see test lines going in near Tahsis, Baynes Sound, Tofino and Port Hardy.
