Students’ Union to make a plea at meeting today

Vancouver Island University students hope to reason with the Board of Governors when they meet today in Parksville.

Students’ Union spokesperson Patrick Barbosa says tuition and ancillary fees for the universities are supposed to be limited to a 2% increase.

But Barbosa says 5 universities are proposing ancillary fee increases of 6.5%.

Barbosa says the Students Union has been trying to communicate with the Ministry of Advanced Education but have been unable to get a response.

He believes the ministry has underfunded universities to the point where the institutions are ignoring the 2% and that’s problematic.
