The head of the North Island 911 corporation is reminding people to stay on the line if you accidentally dial 911. Larry Samson says abandoned calls are a huge issue for emergency services across the province.
He says dispatchers at North Island 911 deal with 12,000 abandoned calls each year. He notes it’s easy to accidentally call 911 – you could pocket dial, a child could get a hold of a phone, etc. But he maintains that it’s important to stay on the line.
Samson says emergency services are required to follow-up on abandoned calls to ensure that everyone is okay and the call was in fact an accident.
