Powell River RCMP remind drivers to slow down in school zones

Powell River RCMP are reminding residents that school zones are in effect as a new school year has begun.

The 30 km/h speed limit is in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on regular school days unless stated otherwise on a sign.

Penalties for speeding in a school zone begin at $196 and three demerit points.

Kids returning to school can easily be distracted and not pay attention to vehicles,” says a press release from Powell River RCMP. “Drivers also need to be aware that school buses will be back on the road. We all want to keep our children safe so please be alert, slow down and stop when required.

Passing a school bus in either direction while its red lights are flashing is illegal.

There are cameras on the buses to catch those who don’t stop.

The fine for not stopping is $368.
