RCMP’s newest member brings a paws-itive approach to helping crime victims

There’s a new team member at the Powell River RCMP and qathet SAFE detachment, and she can’t wait to help people in need.

Serrano is an accredited justice facility dog, trained by the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society, who will be working with Christine Schreiber (Shry-ber) in victim services.

Christine runs the victim services department, supporting all victims of crime at the RCMP detachment, at the courthouse and in the community.

She has worked with therapy dogs in the past and discovered the positive effects that dogs can have on people facing difficult circumstances. Facility dogs are used to help regulate peoples’ emotions and have been proven to lessen the severity of trauma symptoms.

Dogs just make everything better, she says.
