Local food drive to kick off in Powell River on Wednesday

A food drive dedicated to helping families in need is kicking off in Powell River on Wednesday.

The drive is put together by Lift Community Services and River City Coffee Roasters, with the goal of raising donations for the Family Place Resource Centre.

The centre focuses on helping families in the city, with a food pantry, drop-in playgrounds, and support groups all offered by the centre.

Family program coordinator for Lift Jackie Storms says as food prices continue to go up, more families are struggling to put food on the table.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of young families struggling to afford food and everyday items,” said Storms.

“That’s why we’re asking local residents to help us support and provide for the dozens of families who access Family Place each week.”

You are encouraged to bring food and toiletry donations to the drive, with the most needed items being bread, pasta, rice, canned vegetables, cereal, oatmeal, and juices.

The drive is happening at River City Coffee Roasters on Joyce Avenue, running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.
