Another Swimmer Conquers the Georgia Strait

After putting it off earlier this month Rachel Schoeler completed a 35 kilometer swim from Nanaimo to Sechelt on Saturday.WEBSITE

Schoeler, who works with the Fraser Riverkeepers, was trying to raise funds and awareness for their “Swimmable Water Project”.

She says as far as she knows she’s the first woman to do it solo since 1972 and the first person in a long time to do it without a wet suit.

Schoeler is an experienced open-water swimmer and she also went by the strict rules set for attempts to swim the English Channel… including no touching the support boat.

Schoeler says she wasn’t even aware of the biggest challenge she faced until afterwards, when the crew told her she’d been caught in current and barely moved for 2 and a half hours.
