Local government leaders say they’ve got the evidence to show that rising fares and cuts at BC Ferries are hurting the economy.
The Union of BC Municipalities and the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities have released a study that says the hit to the provincial GDP has been 2.3 billion dollars over 10 years.
Campbell River councillor Claire Moglove is on the UBCM executive. She says one of the most revealing findings is that BC Ferries recovers 92 per cent of its operating costs through fares:
The UBCM’s top recommendation is for the province to restore fares and service on BC Ferries to 2013 levels.
