Departments Across Canada Mark Fire Prevention Week

Fire departments across the country are promoting safety as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Trish Greenwood with Powell River Fire says this year’s theme is “Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out”. She says the goal is to have families plan 2 escape routes in case a fire breaks out in their home.

“Check every room – do you have two ways out of that room? Have you actually practised it [a fire safety plan in your home] because sometimes you think you can get out one way and maybe you can’t, so practising it is really important. Once you’re out of the house, do you have a meeting place so that everybody can get together and make sure everyone is safe?”

Greenwood says that the Powell River department will be hosting events this weekend, including demonstrations and activities.

More details can be found through their Facebook page. Further information about Fire Prevention Week can be found at nfpa.org/fire-prevention-week.
