ICBC Launches Pedestrian Safety Campaign

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is promoting pedestrian safety.

Statistics from ICBC show that 43% of all crashes that injure pedestrians happen between October and January. Spokesperson Colleen Woodger says there are a lot of factors that can affect the safety of pedestrians on the roads.

“Definitely distracted driving and vehicles failing to yield when it’s their turn to stop. What that kind of looks like is basically not stopping at an intersection. A lot of people aren’t aware that is the majority of where pedestrian crashes happen. About 76% of involving pedestrians actually happen at intersections.”

Woodger says to increase their own safety, pedestrians should wear bright clothing, put their electronics away and make sure to make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street. For more details on pedestrian safety, visit ICBC’s website.
