RD Testing Emergency Notification System Ahead of Great BC ShakeOut

Emergency coordinators are prepping residents for the Great BC Shakeout on Thursday, October 19th.

Manager of Emergency Services for the Powell River Regional District, Ryan Thoms says that in accordance with the earthquake drill, they’ll be testing out their emergency notification system.

“The Powell River Regional Emergency Service is going to be exercising our staff in our emergency operations centre and a part of that will also include using our community emergency notification system, in which people can receive emergency notices on their phones – whether it’s a landline, their cell phone or text message or emails. We’ll be testing that.”

Thoms says it’s important to practice and earthquake drill and make an emergency plan in case a big quake does strike.

He encourages residents who haven’t signed up for the emergency notification system yet to do so.

You can sign up for the notifications on the City and RD’s websites, as well as the Tla’amin First Nation webpage.
