Powell River RD’s Name Change Gains Momentum

The Powell River Regional District’s name change is another step closer to becoming a reality.

Staff are hoping to have the name changed to the Qathet Regional District.

Board Chair Patrick Brabazon says now that the board has voted “YES”, it’s now up to the Province to make the change official.

“We’re waiting for the Cabinet to advise the Lieutenant Governor to issue a new letters patent with a new name for us.” He says community reaction has been mixed in regards to changing the Regional District’s name.

“We got over 500 responses. About 200 and some were in favour and 100 and some were opposed and then there was a bunch that might like to go for a name change but didn’t like that one [Qathet RD].”

Brabazon says they’re hopeful the name change can come into effect in time for the RD’s 50th anniversary on December 19th.

He says changing the name would help represent the entire region the District serves, and would also help with reconciliation efforts with First Nations.
