POWELL RIVER, B.C.- Council has approved funding for a new pilot project.
The Community Benefit Hub is in partnership with the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC).
Powell River mayor Dave Formosa said the project was spearheaded by councilor Rob Southcott.
The pilot will see experts come into the community and explore the best opportunities for the city to acquire funds for big projects like the new wastewater treatment facility.
“The city is going to spend a bunch of money (for a city project), we take it out to an RFP (request for proposals), and (figure out) how do we work into that RFP some procurement opportunities for the city that’s part in parcel of that operation, but at the same time not jeopardizing that operation by being too onerous, that you can’t get quotes that are viable,” he explained.
“There are people with expertise and groups of communities that are getting together on these social procurement opportunities, so we are a part of that particular group and are paying a small amount of money towards this pilot project.”
At their most recent meeting, council approved $1700 in the 2018 budget for the two-year pilot project.
