After 68 years, tanks razed on Powell River waterfront

POWELL RIVER, B.C. – The old fuel storage tanks are coming down at the Powell River waterfront.

Four tanks, each 33-feet tall, are being demolished. Owned by Imperial Oil, they have been part of the waterfront’s landscape since 1950.

“They’re the big gas/oil tank Esso has had for many, many, many years,” Powell River Chamber of Commerce executive director Kim Miller said.

“Everybody’s been waiting and waiting and anticipating that they’re going to come down some day.”

The tanks started toppling on Thursday morning.

“We knew in the next year or two that they’d be coming down but it was really surprising today,” Miller told the MyPowellRiverNow.com newsroom on Thursday. “All of the sudden they started coming down.”

It’s significant for the community, Miller said. “I’ve been in my office for 20 years and they were here long before me. They have been here a long time.”
