Powell River RCMP clarify cancellation request for Diversity Fest

POWELL RIVER, B.C- The Powell River RCMP have not asked for a popular festival on Texada Island to be cancelled.

Earlier this week, chatter on social media had indicated that the detachment had put in a request to the qathet Regional District to have the event cancelled in 2019.

This past summer, a 23 year old Prince Rupert woman drowned after falling off a rocky bluff she had been climbing at the event, which left the detachment concerned.

However, a statement released by Staff Sergeant Rod Wiebe has touched on the alleged request.

According to Wiebe, the report originated with the representative from qathet’s Area D, who had said that the detachment had submitted a report asking for the event to be cancelled during a Community Policing Committee meeting.

“I would like to clarify that, although we do have significant safety concerns about the event and it’s location, all stakeholders including the organizers would be engaged before any decisions would be made as to the future of the event,” wrote Wiebe.

“Any decisions made will be taking all factors into consideration and in consultation with stakeholders and organizers.”

The newsroom will reach out to the event organizers for comment.
