New Guide and Service Dog Act takes effect

A new Guide and Service Dog Act has been introduced with new guidelines for service dogs.

The new regulations include higher training standards, visible identification for the public, and recognizing both service dogs and guide dogs.

B.C. and Alberta Guide Dogs CEO Bill Thornton says one of the changes is aimed at improving accessibility for those who use service dogs. He says the government will issue ID cards to residents who use service and guide dogs.

The act will also allow dogs-in-training the same access that is granted to fully trained certified dogs.
