Protection for pets left in hot cars

The provincial NDP has introduced a bill that would allow bylaw enforcement officers to seize animals, specifically dogs in distress, when they’ve been left in a hot car.

The head of the Nanaimo SPCA says the organization spends a lot of time looking into calls of dogs left in hot cars. Leon Davis says that usually, pet owners genuinely believe they won’t be gone from the car for that long.

Davis says the SPCA gets numerous calls about animals in hot cars, but the vehicle and its owner has usually left by the time they arrive on scene.
