Woman bitten by bear on Powell River trail

Editor’s note: This story was updated at 5:57 p.m. Wednesday with new information, including bear’s outcome and status of the victim.

A woman is recovering at home after being bitten by a black bear on a local trail.

Powell River RCMP say the woman, walking her dog Wednesday morning, did everything right.

But that didn’t stop a black bear on the McGuffie Trail from biting her.

The woman was hospitalized and treated for her wounds and is now recovering at home.

A conservation officer from Sechelt had been called in to deal with the bear but police officers found the animal before they arrived and destroyed it.

RCMP say the Conservation Officers are now in charge of the investigation.

Hikers and bikers had been told during the day to avoid the McGuffie trail system – a single track trail used primarily for mountain biking.

In a statement, Powell River RCMP Detachment Commander Rod Wiebe thanked trail users for their cooperation.
