Police in Powell River are reminding the public to be vigilant when transferring money and personal information after a recent fraud was committed.
Powell River RCMP say a local artist lost thousands of dollars in a scam this week.
Officers say the artist got a cheque from a purchaser for three pieces of artwork. However, a little bit later the artist got a call from the purchaser saying their child was dying of COVID and needed some of the money refunded.
Police say the artist wired back a large portion of the funds, but the cheque had never actually made it into the account and the artist lost thousands of their own money.
RCMP say they are investigating the fraud.
