All outdoor fires on Savary Island banned with dry weather

All outdoor fires on Savary Island are banned, due to dry weather and fire incidents.

The ban came into effect Sunday with a weather forecast not showing any rain expected in the area.

The qathet Regional District adds three fires happened on Sunday, with one underneath a wharf.

Residents were able to put out one of the fires before it spread and the Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department managed to take care of the rest.

Fire chief Chris Philpott says there were other incidents that showed campfire negligence and unsafe fire use over the long weekend.

“In combination with the dry weather conditions, it necessitated additional fire restrictions,” said Philpott.

While the fire ban is in place, the district reminds you that you could get a maximum penalty of $2,000 if any violation of the ban is made.
