More funding announced for emergency response in qathet Regional District

A funding boost from the province will help strengthen emergency operation centres in the qathet Regional District.

That’s according to Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons. The district will be getting $30,000, and that will be put towards regional emergency response centre training.

Simons says this is important because of the area’s exposure to potential disasters.

“The Sunshine Coast is somewhat geographically isolated, which is why it’s important that people have the supplies and information they need to prepare for extreme weather events,” said Simons in a release.

The regional district is not the only area receiving funds. A total of 100 local governments and First Nations will receive funding, totalling nearly $3 million.

On Vancouver Island, the Comox Valley Regional District and Cowichan Valley Regional District and partner communities are getting $150,000 each and the Strathcona Regional District is getting $329,200.

The BC NDP add the centres are an essential part of emergency response as they co-ordinate actions and resources to support responders.
