qathet Regional District announces new support plan during AccessAbility Week

During National AccessAbility Week, the qathet Regional District is developing a plan to support people with disabilities.

Through collaboration with the City of Powell River and Powell River Public Library, the three-year Accessibility Plan will be used to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities in their communities.

Public Library Chief Librarian Rebecca Burbank says the library is excited to be a part of building this initiative, with the hopes that it’ll help improve their spaces and services for those in need.

“We strive to provide equitable access to information and learning opportunities to keep everyone reading, including adaptive collections, technology and services to support patrons with disabilities,” says Burbank.

As part of making this plan, the district adds they’re putting up both an online survey and open house for residents to provide feedback and share solutions to making services, infrastructure, and programs more accessible and inclusive.

The open house is set to take place at the Powell River Public library on Alberni Street, running from 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday June 28th.

The survey’s deadline is on July 4th this year, with the survey available on the qathet Regional District’s website.

The plan is set to be available in late summer or early fall of this year.
