Eight properties selected by Powell River for affordable housing

Some properties  could be used for housing in Powell River, with a list of properties set to be shown to the province.

Eight properties were picked by the Select Committee on City-Owned Properties,  with the list intended to start discussions with the province about the issues of housing in the city.

City Mayor Ron Woznow said the process of choosing the properties included the input of a consulting firm.

“In 2021, the city hired a consulting firm to evaluate 150 city owned properties and they recommended the top 25 with development potential for a range of uses, including affordable housing, industrial parks and commercial space,” said Woznow.

“Of those 25, the committee selected the eight properties most suitable for housing.”

Woznow added that with affordable housing being one of Premier Eby’s top priorities, a partnership with the province could support the community.

On last Thursday’s council meeting, the committee made a report identifying six parcels of vacant land and two of developed land that could be used for housing.

The sites included Drake Street, Duncan Street, and Barnet Street all made up of 1 parcel, Willingdon Avenue made up of 2, Ewing Place with 3, and a portion of Joyce Avenue.
