A popular campground near Powell River is closed because of a dangerous bear.
The qathet Regional District says today the Haywire Bay Campground and day-use area is now closed because of the bear. Group site reservations are being refunded and signs will be posted. Day-use visitors are restricted from entering the area and are advised to find alternative outdoor recreation sites.
Patrick Deveraux, Manager of Operational Services for the regional district, says the closure is on the recommendations of a BC Conservation Officer. He says staff will continue to monitor the campground.
Regional board chair Clay Brander says the district regrets any inconvenience caused by the closure, and points out the goal is to prevent negative interactions between humans and wildlife.
