First case of Zombie honeybees discovered in Canada

The first case of Zombie honeybees has been documented in Canada, and it’s on Vancouver Island.

A bee keeper in Nanaimo has found has them in her hive. Peter Lange, with the Nanaimo Bee Club, says it’s a type of fly that lays its eggs in the bee and when the eggs hatch, the larvae attack the bee’s brain.

He says, unfortunately, there’s not much bee keepers can do to combat the parasite.

The parasite has been known to target bumblebees and wasps, but this is the first documented case in honey bees in Canada. Experts are trying to determine whether the fly targeting honeybees is a new development or if it just hasn’t been documented up until this point.
