New volunteers ready to provide FireSmart assessments across regional district

Twelve new wildfire mitigation specialists have now been trained and the qathet Regional District says they’re ready to start home assessments.

The volunteers were trained for four days in the FireSmart Home Partners Program, and they can now provide assessments, and evaluations for homes and properties for fire exposure, and educate homeowners on potential risks.

Manager of emergency services Ryan Thoms says increasing the number of properties the district can assess will help prevent the spread of fires.

“Assessments have been offered since 2017, and we’re keen to increase the number of homes we’re able to assess,” he says. “This new training is an improvement toward providing even better FireSmart guidance for residents across our region.”

The district says anyone who wants a home assessment can email them.

The FireSmart Home Partners program is a collaboration between FireSmart Canada, FireSmart BC, all levels of government, Indigenous communities, the private sector and homeowners in Canada.
