19-year-old rescued after fall at popular Powell River trail

A 19-year-old in Powell River was rescued after falling at Stillwater Bluffs.

According to a social media post by Powell River Fire Rescue, they received a call on Friday of someone falling 10 feet onto the rocks at the popular trail.

Members of the Malaspina volunteer fire department and Powell River Search and Rescue Society also took part in the rescue.

Acting chief of the Malaspina fire department William Ashworth says when they got the call, it came in as a low-angle rescue.

“When we arrived on scene, it turned out it was a 15-minute hike through trails to get to the bluffs and it was a more significant drop, so a high-angle rescue was required,” said Ashworth.

“We mobilized everybody to come out and make sure we could get them because we were facing the rising tide and the dark.”

Campbell River Search and Rescue were called in to extract the person by helicopter after it was decided that would be the safest way to perform the rescue. Ashworth says the 19-year-old was transported to a waiting ambulance after 3 and a half hours.

“It’s my understanding that there was a concern for spinal injuries, so we immobilized the patient immediately,” said Ashworth.

“It was serious enough that we had to get him out via stretcher.”

Search and Rescue Manager Chad Honey says the patient suffered a concussion, skull fracture, and leg injury from the fall.
