This weekend will see the launch of a summer-long campaign to reduce drinking and driving on BC’s streets and highways.
ICBC says while significant progress has been made since CounterAttack roadchecks began in 1977, about 61 lives are still lost every year because of impaired driving.
Each summer in BC, impaired driving crashes that cause injuries or death increase by 27 per cent.
On Vancouver Island the number of drinking and driving related crashes rise by 21 per cent.
On average, 10 people are killed and 305 injured in impaired driving related crashes on Vancouver Island every year.
Fiona Wilson, President of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police says driving under the influence is a serious and reckless decision.
She says people need to “understand the life-altering consequences that can arise from this irresponsible behavior.”
Starting this weekend, police will be setting up CounterAttack checks for impaired drivers throughout the province.
ICBC says if you consume alcohol or other drugs, plan to get home with a designated driver, taxis, rideshare, or take transit.
