A significant portion of crown land has been secured by the qathet Regional District with the signing of a lease agreement for a new park on Lasqueti Island.
According to the district, staff pursued a license to occupy the land from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure during a board meeting on Jun. 5, 2024.
The district says the idea was pitched two years ago when the Lasqueti Nature Conservancy presented a plan to create a regional park to align with the results established during a regional survey conducted by the conservancy.
“The decision to establish Spring Bay Regional Park aligns with the desires of Lasqueti Island residents,” the district says. “The survey revealed a strong local desire for parkland and trails on the north end of the island, emphasizing the importance to off-roads walking trails.”
Area E director Andrew Fall says providing spaces for people to enjoy while protecting natural resources is critical to making sure the management of natural areas is preserved.
“Seeing Spring Bay Regional Park come to fruition showcases the great things our community can accomplish when we work together,” he says. “We thank the Lasqueti Island Nature Conservancy for their advocacy to enhance the outdoor recreational opportunities and land conservation.”
The decision stems from a committee of the whole meeting on Jan. 13, 2022.
