With lean years ahead after losing tax revenue from the shuttered mill site, Powell River Council is considering cancelling the Zunga Bus.
At a special council meeting July 30, Mayor Ron Woznow suggested the on-demand bus service be scrapped for 2025 and 2026.
“Council has a responsibility to the taxpayers to remain fiscally responsible. Property tax revenue from major industry in 2025 and beyond is unknown, due to the permanent closure of the mill,” said Mayor Ron Woznow, reading the motion to cut the service.
During discussion. Councillor George Doubt said it made more sense to consider budget cuts during formal budget discussions about all services that might face the axe under a tighter budget. However, Councillor Jim Palm agreed with the mayor, adding it would be best to start making tough financial decisions now, to show leadership.
Despite a few objections, council voted in favour of deferring the discussion to fall, when budget deliberations begin. Meanwhile, staff will create a detailed report about who is using the Zunga Bus, and how often, to help decide the fate of the service.
