qathet Homelessness Prevention Program expands to 49 families

A program dedicated to helping low-income families in the qathet Region has expanded to 49 families.

Called the qathet Homelessness Prevention program, it aims to help low-income families stay housed by providing $440 a month to their rent.

The program is run by Lift Community Services, who say that in June this year, the program has expanded from 14 families to 49 through help by the BC Government.

Lift’s Housing Services manager Julie Jenkins says there has been a lot of interest in the program because of the increasing cost of rent.

“We’re pleased to say that all 49 supplements have now been distributed in community,” said Jenkins.

Lift says the program works on a referral basis, where local service providers can find and recommend eligible families to the program, while they help them with applying to it. These providers include the Tla’amin Nation, Vancouver Coastal Health, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, qathet Safe, and the qathet School District.

They add rental supplements have no time limit, meaning once approved, you can still get support if you remain eligible for the program.

“Lift has ambitious goals to address homelessness in our community and to be successful, we need to tackle it from all sides.”
