Police encourages extra caution while driving in school zones

Powell River RCMP encourages you to be careful while driving in school zones this school year.

Police say all school zones will be in effect right after Labour Day Weekend, with the speed limit for each zone being 30 kilometers an hour.

While school zones are in place from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., playground zones will still be in effect all week from dawn to dusk.

To keep people safe during this time, officers will remind motorists and bike riders to fully stop at stop signs, occupied crosswalks, and when the lights on the school bus are flashing either yellow or red.

Once the lights stop flashing and the bus moves, you can continue driving.

They also encourage you to take extra precautions in any area where children may cross the road.

These changes come into effect starting September 3.
