Fuel management project to start near Cranberry Lake this month

To lower the risk of wildfires, a fuel management project will start next to Cranberry Lake this fall.

The qathet Regional District says the BC Ministry of Forests will start an operational fuel management treatment on multiple treatment units, affecting 22.5 hectares.

The goal of the treatment is to lower the risk of wildfires and its severity, with hopes of giving crews better access when responding to fires.

As part of the work, crews will make a shaded fuel break to lower the length of the flames. They say during that time, small-stemmed trees in the area will be removed.

Along with some trees, they say heavy undergrowth and 2 metre tree branches will be removed too, with some remaining material to be placed in piles to be burned later.

Because of the burning, the district adds you can expect to see smoke if you’re in Cranberry Lake.

The work will run from September this year to March 2025.
