Tla’amin Nation plans housing development on traditional village site

The Tla’amin Nation is planning to build 30 new homes on its traditional village site of tiskʷət.

On Tuesday the provincial government and BC Housing announced it will be working with Indigenous non-profit housing providers to build more than 1,600 new affordable rental homes for Indigenous people throughout the province.

For the Tla’amin, that will mean 30 homes with two or three bedrooms, similar in design to the nation’s recently-completed 24-unit Elders and Assisted Needs housing complex.

“Tla’amin people are returning home to tiskʷət. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has got us to this point: Our Ancestors who cared for this Land since time immemorial, our Development Planning team for helping us with the Proposal, and to BC Housing for recognizing the meaning this project will have for our Nation’s healing,” said CArmen Galligos, Director of Public Works and Capital Infrastructure. “This is a huge step forward for our people to live outside of our old Reserve boundaries & reconcile with our neighbors. I’m so proud and joyful to see this project move forward.”

The new housing will provide better access to transportation routes, allowing easier access to work, schools, health care, and recreational facilities. It will be the nation’s first major housing development outside its main community. It’s supported by local and regional governments, and the Chamber of Commerce.
