Night flights can resume at the Powell River airport, now that new lighting has been installed.
The airport can now resume service 24-7 for all types of aircraft. Most critically, night-time medevac flights can resume to take patients in emergencies to hospitals in the Lower Mainland.
The city spent more than $6.3 million this year upgrading the airport, including improvements to the 40-year-old runway and replacing the lighting system with new energy-efficient LEDs. The light system upgrade was the last part of the project to be completed, runway improvements were finished in early June.
The upgrades were done by Campbell River-based company Upland Contracting and the funding was covered by a federal grant through the Airport Capital Assistance Program.
