Pickleball association seeks lease to build facility in Powell River

A local organization hopes to get a land lease for a pickleball facility in Powell River.

In a letter to the mayor and council, the qathet Pickleball Association is asking for a lease agreement to build a dedicated 8 court indoor pickleball facility for Powell River and the qathet Region.

The facility will provide more space for players and also provide support for juniors to become lifelong players, create a new tourist spot, and to give players a new location to play as the PR Racquet Centre will be closed soon.

The number of pickleball players has gone up in the past decade, from 10 people in 2013 to 150 this year.

Association president Susan Young says they are requesting for 1.25 acres of land.

“The section of land the qPA is currently pursuing is adjacent to the upper parking lot of the PR Recreation Complex,” said Young.

“It is important to note that the qPA prefers this building site because it is adjacent to the PR Complex and would support a community fitness hub model.”

Young says if approved, the facility will be developed and run as a non-profit, with hopes it can make pickleball inclusive, affordable, and accessible for the community.

The letter will be presented at Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting, starting at 3:30 p.m.
