Powell River pickleballers are asking the city for help to build a new eight-court indoor pickleball facility.
Susan Young with the qathet Pickleball Association spoke to council this week, asking to lease one and a quarter acres of land by the upper parking lot of the Powell River Recreation Complex. Once they have the lease in place, they will start fundraising for the new building.
The association is also willing to provide non-profit administration and management of the new facility, similar to what’s in place at the Powell River Racquet Centre.
Councillors generally liked the idea, Councillor Jim Palm said it will bring different pickleball groups together and help the sport grow locally.
Young pointed out pickleball has become hugely popular in the last 10 years, going from a dozen players in 2013 to hundreds now playing every week.
Council directed staff to look into the lease request, and report back at a future meeting.
