New rule allows for tenants to break lease early

A change to British Columbia’s residential tenancy rules has come into effect.

The change to the Act will allow for the early end to a lease, by a tenant who is fleeing family violence or who has been accepted into a long-term care facility.

Jane Sterk with Cowichan Women Against Violence says it’s one less issue women, who need to vacate their home because of violence, or the threat of violence, will have to worry about.

Previously, tenants in these situations could only end a lease early, without a financial penalty, if their landlord agreed to it.

Now, that lease can be broken early with an eligible third-party verifier, like a transition house worker, outreach worker, police officer, physician, or registered social worker.
