City, Tla’amin Nation sign deal on liquid waste management

The Tla’amin Nation and City of Powell River have signed a 50-year deal to hook the nation up to city sewage treatment systems.

The new deal will allow the nation to decommission its own obsolete plant, and restore the waterfront site into a community recreational space. The nation will pay sewer user fees equivalent to what city residents are charged.

Tla’amin Hegus John Hackett says it’s a win-win, replacing aging intrastructure to take advantage of the city’s new system with extra capacity, and providing the city new revenue to help cover costs.

The connection to the Tla’amin Nation infrastructure will be built next year. The city’s new system, completed last year, replaced three older systems, and is designed to meet future growth needs.
