Pickleballers will be homeless after racquet centre closes Feb 8

The Powell River Racquet Centre will be closing next month, leaving hundreds of pickleballers without a place to play.

The qathet Pickleball Association has been looking for a new home since last year, when they found out their landlord has new tenants interested in the building, and who are willing to pay higher rent.

The centre, located in the old Super Valu building on Joyce Avenue, opened for indoor racquetball and tennis players in 2017. It’s become a lot busier since the emergence of pickleball as a popular sport.

The association hopes to fundraise enough money to build its own indoor facility with eight indoor courts, and are trying to work with the city to find an appropriate location.

The facility will be vacated by February 8.
