BC’s independent police watchdog is now investigating the death of a man in Powell River on Tuesday.
On January 21 at about 10:40 am, RCMP responded to a request to check on the wellness of a man living in the 4500 block of Golden Street. Officers spoke to the man and left.
Later at around 6 pm, police received another call regarding the same man. This time, the caller reported the man was armed. Police attended the scene along with members of the Emergency Response Team.
Shortly after they arrived, the man was pronounced dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is now investigating if police action, or inaction, played any role in the death.
The IIO is asking that any witnesses that have not already provided a statement, or who have other video footage of the incident, to please contact the IIO at the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
