The Powell River airport upgrade project ended up costing more than a million dollars less than expected.
That’s mostly because one planned improvement, certifying the runway to non-precision instrument approaches by aircraft, could not be met. As well, the project was changed from original plans to extend the runway over an old landfill because it was too expensive.
However the project did extend the main runway by nearly 150 feet, installed new LED lighting, and increased the load capacity for some aircraft.
The project is mostly complete now, well before the March 31 deadline, with just under $18,000 in work still required.
Council reviewed the final numbers at tonight’s regular meeting.
