Homeowner flown to hospital in Vancouver after house fire

A Powell River house fire resulted in one of the homeowners being medevac’d.

The incident took place at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, where a family dwelling was caught on fire on Cook Avenue in the Westview Area.

Powell River Fire Rescue sent the first truck with three firefighters to the scene minutes after the call.

Deputy Fire Chief Rocky Swanson says once on scene, the firefighters saw some residents trying to fight the fire.

“We immediately began structural firefighting operations,” said Swanson.

“We were informed by family members that there was likely nobody inside the house, but we still had to search because people can be disorientated and not realize that they have family members inside. In this case we did not find anyone inside thankfully, it was not a survivable situation.”

Swanson says the entire home was engulfed by the flames, with 60-kilometer winds feeding the fire. 90 to 95 percent of the home was severely damaged.

22 firefighters were on scene and were able to contain the fire after three to four hours.

Swanson says while the firefighters didn’t suffer any injuries, some people were injured.

“One of the homeowners was med evacuated via helicopter to St. Paul’s in the Lower Mainland for burns and smoke inhalation,” said Swanson.

He adds the fire appears to be an accidental one, with a full investigation of the situation to take place Thursday.

He encourages you to have working smoke detectors, and in case of a fire, close the doors, get out and call 9-1-1 instead of fighting it.
