Campfire ban will be in effect this week, except parts of north Island, Sunshine Coast

A fire ban across the Coastal Fire Centre will take effect July 16.

Category 1, 2 and 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the jurisdiction, except for Category 1 campfires in parts of the North Island and the Sunshine Coast.

“Category 1 campfires remain permitted in the Campbell River Forest District, North Island Central Coast Forest District, Haida Gwaii Forest District and Sunshine Coast Forest District,” the Coastal Fire Centre said in a news release.

Category 2 and Category 3 fire prohibitions will remain in effect throughout the Coastal Fire Centre.

“This prohibition is being modified to help reduce human-caused wildfires and for public safety in areas where weather conditions have changed. This prohibition will be in place until October 31, 2026, or until the order is rescinded,” the release said.

Fireworks, exploding targets, burn barrels, air curtain burners and carbonizers are also prohibited.

The ban applies to all areas within the Coastal Fire Centre outside municipal boundaries, although municipalities may impose their own restrictions.

It also applies to wildlife management areas, parks, recreation sites and ecological reserves, even if they are within municipal boundaries.
