The City of Powell River will receive $3,666,618 from the Build Communities Strong Strategic Priorities Fund for improvements to the Powell River Aquatic Centre roof.
The city said the project will modernize the roof structure and building envelope to extend the facility’s service life.
The total project cost is estimated at $10.1 million. The remaining funding will come from the city’s Community Forest Reserve Fund and B.C.’s Growing Communities Fund.
The city said the project will not require borrowing.
“This financial support from the Governments of Canada and British Columbia allows us to complete this much-needed infrastructure revitalization project,” said Mayor Ron Woznow. “The roof improvements can proceed without borrowing, and staff may now begin planning for construction which will include ways to minimize disruptions.”
Work will include replacing the deteriorated roof membrane, corroded steel roof deck and structural steel, improving insulation, installing a continuous air/vapour barrier, replacing exterior metal panels and upgrading humidity control and ventilation systems.
The city said construction is expected to begin as early as spring 2027 and take eight to 10 months to complete.
