Local bears are clocking in for garbage duty

The City of Powell River is reminding residents to secure garbage and other attractants, as bear season progresses.

The city laid out several recommendations on how residents can curb bear activity in their neighbourhoods, including:

  • Making sure lids on waste bins fit tight
  • Keeping all recycling and garbage inside a garage, shed or bear-resistant enclosure until the morning of collection
  • Managing odours by cleaning the inside of waste bins
  • Ensuring bird feeders and pet food are taken away and fallen fruits are picked up

The city says failing to keep up with waste, odours and wildlife attractants risks attracting bears into residential areas.
